Indochina, which consists of the current states of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, officially became a French colony in 1887 and was for 67 years. Indochina gained independence in 1950 after being successful in the First Indochina War. The fighting lasted until 1954 but was then declared independence. Japans surrendered in WWII where the Vietnam communist, Ho Chi Minh declared independence of Vietnam in France. This was declared after the Japanese had over-run the area, and the French came back in 1945. The Americans and Vietnamese in Paris signed a peace agreement and this is where they finally gained independence from France. Some important leaders during the time of gaining independence was president, Richard Nixon. This is how the French Indochina gained independence from France.
